Cookie Policy

Last updated: September 28, 2026.

This Cookie Policy explains how My Rome Trip uses cookies and similar technologies on myrometrip.com. It should be read together with the Privacy Policy.

The policy is intended to reflect the rules applicable in Italy and the European Union, including Article 122 of Legislative Decree 196/2003 (the Italian Privacy Code), Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR), the ePrivacy framework and the Italian Data Protection Authority’s guidelines on cookies and other tracking tools.

1. What cookies and similar technologies are

Cookies are small text files that a website or third party can store on a browser or device and read on later requests. Similar technologies can include local storage, pixels, tags, software development tools, device identifiers and other techniques capable of storing or accessing information on a user’s terminal equipment. Tracking can also occur through techniques that do not rely on traditional cookies.

2. First-party and third-party cookies

  • First-party cookies are set by My Rome Trip or by infrastructure operating under the website’s domain.
  • Third-party cookies are set or read by a service provider whose domain is different from My Rome Trip, for example when an external service, embed or analytics feature is used.

A cookie may also be a session cookie, which normally expires when the browser session ends, or a persistent cookie, which remains until its stated expiry or until it is deleted.

3. Legal rule for storing or accessing information on a device

Under Article 122 of the Italian Privacy Code, storing information on a user’s device or accessing information already stored there generally requires the user’s prior consent unless the technology is used solely to transmit a communication over an electronic communications network or is strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user.

For technologies that require consent, the consent must also satisfy the GDPR: it must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous, and it must be possible to withdraw it as easily as it was given. Silence, inactivity or pre-selected boxes do not constitute valid consent. Merely scrolling a page is not, by itself, valid consent to non-essential tracking.

4. Categories of cookies and technologies

CategoryPurposeConsent
Strictly necessary / technicalPage delivery, security, load balancing, fraud prevention, consent storage and functions expressly requested by the userNormally not required where the legal exemption applies
Preference / functionalRemember optional settings or enable enhanced functionalityDepends on whether the technology is strictly necessary for a user-requested feature; otherwise consent may be required
Analytics / audience measurementMeasure visits, performance and use of contentConsent is required unless the analytics configuration qualifies for the limited treatment permitted for technical-equivalent analytics under applicable Italian guidance
Advertising / profilingBuild or infer interests, personalise advertising, measure advertising across sites or follow users over timePrior consent required
Embedded third-party contentLoad maps, videos, social content, booking widgets or other remote servicesPrior consent may be required where loading the content causes non-essential storage/access or tracking
Affiliate attributionIdentify that a click or transaction originated from My Rome TripSimple link parameters do not by themselves require cookie consent; any non-essential cookie or similar tracking used for attribution requires consent where applicable

5. Strictly necessary and technical cookies

Technical cookies may be used to deliver requested pages, keep the website secure, maintain basic session state, remember privacy choices, prevent abuse or provide a feature explicitly requested by the visitor. These technologies are not used for additional profiling purposes when they rely on the technical-cookie exemption.

6. Analytics cookies and audience measurement

Analytics technologies measure how visitors use the site. Under Italian guidance, certain analytics tools may be treated similarly to technical cookies only under restrictive conditions, such as use for aggregate statistics and appropriate data-minimisation measures. If those conditions are not met, analytics tracking must not be activated before the required consent is obtained.

The website database indicates that Jetpack is active, and Jetpack can provide traffic or statistics functions depending on its enabled modules. Jetpack’s own cookie documentation explains which cookies can be used by its various features: Jetpack Cookies.

7. WordPress cookies

WordPress can use cookies for administrative login, session management, comment convenience and other core functions. Cookies used only for logged-in administration or a feature explicitly requested by a user are generally technical. Optional WordPress-connected services can have different purposes and are assessed separately.

8. Jetpack and Automattic cookies

Jetpack is active on My Rome Trip. Jetpack may use cookies or other technologies depending on the modules enabled, including security, statistics, subscriptions, comments or other connected features. Because Jetpack features can change, the exact cookie set can vary according to site configuration and visitor interaction.

For detailed and current information, see Jetpack’s cookie documentation, the Jetpack Privacy Center and Automattic’s Privacy Notice for Visitors to Users’ Sites.

9. Akismet anti-spam

Akismet is active in the website database and is used to help detect spam where comments or relevant form features are enabled. Akismet may process comment or submission information, IP address and user-agent information as necessary for anti-spam protection. Its primary function is anti-abuse rather than advertising. More information is available in the Akismet Privacy Policy.

10. Affiliate links and Booking.com

My Rome Trip contains affiliate links, including links to Booking.com. An affiliate link can contain a partner identifier in the URL so that a later booking can be attributed to My Rome Trip. A URL parameter is not necessarily a cookie, but the destination provider may use its own cookies or similar technologies after you click the link.

Cookies and tracking used on Booking.com are controlled by Booking.com under its own privacy and cookie choices. You can review its Privacy Notice. My Rome Trip does not control the cookies set on a third-party booking platform after you leave this website.

11. Embedded content and third-party widgets

If a page contains externally hosted maps, videos, social media elements, booking widgets or similar content, the third-party provider may receive the visitor’s IP address and other technical information and may attempt to set cookies or similar identifiers. Where the technology is non-essential and consent is legally required, it should not be activated until the visitor has made the required choice.

12. How consent should be requested

Where non-essential cookies or tracking technologies are used, a compliant consent interface should provide clear information before activation and allow the visitor to make a genuine choice. In particular:

  • non-essential technologies should remain disabled until consent where prior consent is required;
  • consent should be given through an affirmative action and not through silence, continued browsing or pre-ticked boxes;
  • accepting and refusing non-essential tracking should be available without deceptive or unnecessarily burdensome design;
  • where multiple purposes or third parties are involved, granular choices should be available where required;
  • the visitor’s choice should be recorded so that it can be respected and, where necessary, demonstrated;
  • withdrawing consent should be as easy as giving it.

13. Cookie walls and access to content

Access to ordinary website content should not normally be made conditional on accepting non-essential tracking unless the legal requirements for a valid alternative-access model are actually satisfied. My Rome Trip does not treat simple scrolling as consent.

14. Remembering and renewing consent choices

A privacy choice should be stored for a reasonable period so that visitors are not repeatedly asked to make the same decision on every visit. Under the Italian Data Protection Authority’s guidance, renewed solicitation of consent should not be unnecessarily frequent; a new request can be appropriate when conditions materially change, when the website cannot know the previous choice, or after the relevant interval indicated by applicable guidance. A renewed choice may also be required when new third parties or purposes are introduced.

15. How to change cookie settings

If My Rome Trip displays a cookie or privacy-preferences interface, you can use it to change or withdraw consent for optional categories. You can also use your browser settings to delete existing cookies, block future cookies or receive warnings before cookies are stored. Browser controls operate independently from the website and can affect functionality.

Deleting cookies may also delete a stored consent preference, which can cause the consent request to appear again on a later visit.

16. Retention and cookie duration

Cookie duration depends on purpose and provider. Session cookies normally expire when the browser session ends. Persistent cookies remain until their expiry date or until deleted. A third-party provider may change cookie names or durations as its services evolve, so its current documentation should be consulted for provider-specific details.

17. Data generated by cookies

Where information collected through cookies or similar technologies is personal data, its processing is also subject to the GDPR and the My Rome Trip Privacy Policy. That includes transparency, legal basis, retention, recipients, international transfers and the rights available to data subjects.

18. Consent Management Platform (CMP) and your privacy choices

My Rome Trip uses a first-party consent management interface to record your privacy choices. On a first visit, optional categories are disabled by default. You can accept all, reject non-essential technologies, or open Manage preferences and choose categories individually. Closing the first-layer banner with the × command keeps only necessary technologies enabled.

Your choice is stored in the first-party cookie mrt_cmp_consent_v1 for up to 180 days. It contains the CMP version, the categories you selected and the date/time of the choice. Its purpose is to remember your decision so that the consent request is not repeatedly shown. This cookie is treated as strictly necessary for consent management.

The available categories are: Necessary (always active), Statistics, Advertising & affiliate measurement, and External content. Optional technologies are intended to load only after consent to the relevant category. Ordinary outbound affiliate links remain usable even when optional marketing measurement is rejected; a destination website may apply its own privacy and cookie rules after you leave My Rome Trip.

You can change or withdraw your choices at any time by selecting Privacy choices in the website footer. A withdrawal applies prospectively. Where an optional script has already executed during the current page view, the page may reload to apply the more restrictive setting and the CMP also attempts to remove common first-party analytics cookies associated with that category.

Jetpack remains installed for website functionality and security features, but the Jetpack Stats module is not activated by this configuration for ordinary visitor analytics. If analytics, advertising or third-party embedded services are introduced later, they should be connected to the relevant CMP category before being enabled.

19. Updates to this Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy may be updated when website functionality, active service providers, cookie categories or legal requirements change. If a change affects the purposes for which consent was previously obtained, a new consent request will be made where required.
